Pathing the way towards Circular Wood through recycling of post-consumer fibreboard (EcoReFibre)

Europe takes the lead in the production of fibreboard which is used in many different industry sectors from furniture to construction. The wide use of fibreboard comes with a high quantity of waste being generated each year while there is currently no economically feasible recycling solution to create a circular (re-)use of post-consumer fibreboard. As a result, fibreboard is mainly made from refined virgin wood. The project EcoReFibre addresses this challenge by launching 5 industry-led pilot demonstrations which will explore new recycling methods using innovative technologies to test various end-products including particleboard and insulation products. The overall goal is to substitute up to 25 % of virgin fibres with recycled fibres in the manufacturing process. The project thus contributes to a circular economy in the wood industry and to a more sustainable use of wood resources in Europe.

Steinbeis Europa Zentrum as a project partner is supporting in business modelling and business plan development, as well as in exploitation strategy building.
