Urban developmentA sustainable model for smart urban regeneration

Project partners of REMOURBAN with representatives of the European Commission visiting Nottingham

The EU enables cities to exchange internationally in Smart Cities and Communities projects and to set new impulses for sustainable urban development. The European concept of Smart Cities and Communities stands for an intelligent interlinking of technologies in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energies, mobility, ICT and citizen participation.

Steinbeis Europa Zentrum is a project partner in the EU-funded project REMOURBAN developing a holistic urban renewal model which can also be used by other cities. With the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption, the model takes into account efficient heating and cooling solutions in buildings and the integration of smart grids and sustainable traffic management systems through ICT applications. In the demonstration neighbourhoods of the three lighthouse cities Valladolid (Spain), Nottingham (UK) and Tepebasi/Eskisehir (Turkey), the model has already succeeded in reducing energy consumption in the neighbourhoods by 50-53% and CO2 emissions by 80% in Valladolid and by 63% in Tepebasi.

Three ICT platforms were developed by the Spanish software company Xeridia, Trent Nottingham University and Ölcsan (Turkey) and tested in three cities. They combine and manage multiple data sources, provide interoperability and create data protocols using public infrastructure data and system data. In addition, a global ICT platform was developed across cities.

The close interaction of energy, mobility and ICT has significantly accelerated the use of innovative technologies and advanced organisational and economic solutions for resource and energy efficiency.

The Steinbeis Europa Zentrum worked with the partners to develop sustainable urban regeneration models based on a holistic approach and identified the potential for replication at European level. It also contributed to the evaluation of the urban regeneration model and supported the testing of the research results. SEZ was in charge of communication, dissemination, exploitation and marketing of the research results.

Paul’s smart world - an animation story on smart cities

„"We have created a solution that can be easily adapted and integrated into different architectures. In addition, we have defined new exploitation models and new services that will be implemented in the future. Steinbeis Europa Zentrum encouraged us from the beginning to think outside the box and accompanied us to analyse the market potential."“
