BioeconomyTowards a bio-based and circular economy

Over the past 70 years, our current economic system has produced unprecedented economic output, prosperity and human well-being. At the same time, however, social inequalities have increased and it has caused environmental damage on a scale that now threatens the stability of our economies, societies and the planet as a whole. To turn the tide, profound changes in socio-economic systems are needed, as the European Green Deal and other European initiatives illustrate.

Circular economy and bioeconomy offer a new economic framework to address these challenges by reducing waste, extending the life of materials and minimising the unsustainable use of natural resources. Bioeconomy involves the transition from a fossil-based economy to a bio-based one in which renewable biomass is used and transformed into value-added products such as food, feed, fertilisers, bio-based materials and fuels.

Cross-sector and cross-stakeholder cooperation projects on these topics are widely funded by the European Commission.
