Novis BioBased Technology GmbHSME is a partner in the major textile research project FABULOSE
Novis BioBased Technology GmbH from Tübingen specialises in biogas plants with substrates that are difficult to ferment. The focus is on finding innovative solutions for converting waste products into new resources.
The German SME develops and builds CO₂ plants in the field of carbon capture and use as a contribution to a climate-friendly economy. CO₂ from exhaust gases is captured, purified, concentrated, and liquefied for subsequent use in other processes for the cultivation of microalgae.
Novis has been in contact with Steinbeis Europa Zentrum since 2016. The company learned about EU funding opportunities at an SME information day held by Steinbeis Europa Zentrum in Reutlingen. In the years that followed, Novis regularly took advantage of consulting and information services on funding opportunities and international partnerships.
In 2024, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum drew the SME's attention to an EU funding proposal that was very much in line with its core business. The Steinbeis Europa Zentrum then helped establish contact with the consortium and assisted with the proposal writing process.
Novis is a partner in the EU FABULOSE project
In the EU FABULOSE project, eleven European partners will develop new sustainable bio-based production routes for animal-free leather alternatives. These are intended to replace animal-derived and plastic-based materials and processes.
Compared to current leather alternatives and production processes, FABULOSE partners focus on materials and prototype products that are completely free of toxic chemicals and plastics; 100% bio-based, recyclable and biodegradable; scalable for mass production using roll-to-roll processes; and competitively priced.
The role of NOVIS GMBH in FABULOSE is primarily focused on the optimization and upscaling of raw materials for coating. The aim is to improve the functionality of bacterial cellulose for application in coating formulations.
Novis is already a partner in the EU project CAPTUS
Novis and Steinbeis Europa Zentrum are already partners in the EU CAPTUS project. The project is dedicated to the production of renewable liquid energy sources from carbon dioxide emissions. CO₂-saving or CO₂-reducing concepts are being developed in three pilot plants for the three largest CO₂ emitting industries, namely the steel, concrete and chemical industries. Novis is working on the development of a plant in Portugal as part of the project. There, the CO₂ is purified, concentrated and stored for further use. The CO₂ is then used to cultivate microalgae to produce bio-oils that can be used as renewable energy sources or bioplastics.
As a project partner, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum supports the 17 CAPTUS partners in the exchange and dissemination of project activities and results in order to effectively communicate the findings to target groups in industry and the public.

„For Novis, innovation in European partnerships is crucial for rapid success in biotechnological developments. Our innovation in liquefying CO2 from exhaust gases and producing bioplastics from algae with ’supplemented" CO2 was only made possible through international projects such as the EU project CAPTUS. This laid the foundations for successful pre-industrial implementation. Another wonderful example is the new EU project FABULOSE: Steinbeis implemented the EU proposal process and the preparation of the written documents with a clear methodology. With diligence and meticulousness, Steinbeis managed to integrate all participating partners into a coherent innovation application. The application was awarded 15 out of a possible 15 points by the European Commission. The highest score! A decisive contribution to the next innovation step on the way to successful products made from CO2 and biomass. Thank you, Steinbeis!“
