European CommissionClean energy for EU islands forum 2025 - European Islands present solutions and strategies
The Clean energy for EU islands forum 2025 brought together representatives from over 45 islands at the Octant Hotel in São Miguel, Azores, to explore how island communities can balance environmental, social and economic needs on their path toward 100% renewable energy. The two‑day event gathered 138 onsite participants, featured 30 speakers, 16 presentations, 4 breakout sessions, and included visits to the Pico Vermelho Geothermal Power Plant and the Caldeirão Battery Energy Storage System.
The first day showcased island achievements and strategic approaches to clean energy. The European Commission and the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat highlighted the need for stronger grid capacity and innovation leadership. The Azores demonstrated notable progress, with São Miguel reaching 44.5% renewables and Graciosa 60%. Keynote speaker Prof. João Abel Peças Lopes emphasised the key role of electric vehicles and storage solutions in supporting grid integration. Breakout sessions addressed renewable energy production, sustainable mobility, and regulatory challenges, while site visits gave participants insight into geothermal and storage technologies.

The second day focused on financing, energy efficiency, and infrastructure. Speakers stressed the importance of bankable business models, local financing cooperation, and project aggregation to scale renewable energy deployment. Discussions on energy efficiency and sustainable transport underlined the need for education, skilled labour and community involvement. Grid modernisation emerged as a central priority, including public investment, digitalisation, and building local technical capacity.
The forum concluded with a strong message: Europe’s islands are not merely adjusting to the energy transition—they are actively leading it.
Steinbeis Europa Zentrum was responsible for the organisational planning and implementation, and all communication measures.
